Day One Traveling Workshop

Foundations of Effective Family Engagement

Key Learning Objectives:

  • The Six Slices of Family Engagement

  • Communicating Effectively

  • Utilizing the Family Engagement Toolbox

  • Making the Pledge count in volunteers and dollars

  • Teacher home visits (optional)​

 

Sustaining:

  • Implementing Red Carpet Treatment

  • Develop a Family Engagement Action Plan

Parent Partnership Tools:

  1. Written Evaluation and Feedback: Surveys to assess current beliefs and practices, fostering effective planning.

  2. Strategies for Engaging Families: Specific actions adapted from the CDC, National PTA, and other experts.

  3. Parent Activity Handbook: Over 100 standards-aligned activities for school-family collaboration.

  4. Red Carpet Treatment: Practical steps to create a welcoming environment for families.

Certification and Planning:

  • Earn the Project Appleseed Title I Certification to demonstrate your leadership in family engagement.

  • Templates to Develop a Customized 10-Step Family Engagement Plan to drive lasting impact.​

Day Two-Extended Workshop Agenda:

3 hours

Collaborative Planning: Participants work in groups to create actionable plans that enhance parent engagement, building on prior activities.

Review and Analysis:

  • Analyze surveys from prior session.

  • Identify parent engagement priorities and strategies.

  • Assess practices, challenges, and solutions using handouts.

  • Collaborate in activities and debrief to refine ideas.

  • Focus on vision, support, communication, and barriers.

  • Gain tools to enhance school-family partnerships.

Vision and Strategy:

  • Build a shared vision for engagement.

  • Enhance communication and provide parenting support.

Align School Events:

  • Design or adapt high-impact events leveraging the Parent Activity Handbook and Six Types of Family Engagement framework for maximum impact.

 

Tracking Pledge Impact Metrics:

  • Count of families completing the Parental Engagement Pledge compact.

  • Total volunteer hours contributed.

  • Estimated dollar value of volunteer contributions to the district.

 

Group Collaboration:

  • Define specific actions, policies, and strategies to promote parent involvement.

  • Address barriers like scheduling conflicts and cultural differences.

 

Focus Area Development:

  • Select focus areas, assign responsibilities, and establish timelines.

  • Plan for progress monitoring and implementation.

 

Teamwork and Refinement:

  • Encourage collaboration among staff, parents, and community members.

  • Ensure feasibility, resource alignment, and stakeholder buy-in.
