St. Louis, MO — Project Appleseed, the national campaign for public school improvement, proudly announces the start of Public School Volunteer Week, a nationwide celebration recognizing the vital role of parents, grandparents, and community members in supporting student success.
Observed annually in April, Public School Volunteer Week brings together schools, families, and communities to honor volunteers, strengthen partnerships, and inspire greater involvement in public education.
“Public School Volunteer Week is about more than recognition—it’s about action,” said Kevin Walker, President of Project Appleseed. “When families are engaged, students achieve more, schools grow stronger, and communities thrive.”
Originally established by Project Appleseed in 1997, Public School Volunteer Week has grown into one of the nation’s longest-running family engagement initiatives. Today, millions of parents and community members participate in activities that support classrooms, mentor students, and build lasting school-family partnerships.
Throughout the week, schools are encouraged to:
Recognize and celebrate volunteers who support student learning
Recruit new family volunteers and expand engagement efforts
Strengthen connections between home and school
Promote meaningful, ongoing family involvement beyond a single event
Public School Volunteer Week highlights the powerful impact of family engagement on student achievement and school success. Volunteers serve in many roles—from classroom helpers and mentors to leaders of school programs—helping create supportive learning environments and stronger school communities.
Project Appleseed also encourages schools to extend the impact through its “150 Days of Family Engagement” initiative, connecting this week with ongoing efforts throughout the school year.
“Family engagement is not a one-week event—it’s a year-round commitment,” Walker added. “This week is a catalyst to build lasting partnerships that support every student.”
Schools and communities across the country are invited to share their celebrations using #PublicSchoolVolunteerWeek and to join the national movement to strengthen public education through family engagement.
