Remembering, Reconnecting, Rebuilding UCHS
Dear Fellow Alumni,
My name is Justin Walker. I graduated from University City High School in 1999. I went on to attend the University of Missouri where I received my degree in business management. I worked in banking for several years and I am now the director of alumni relations for Project Appleseed. As most of you know, this is the nonprofit organization founded by my dad - back when I was in fifth grade at Jackson Park! Project Appleseed is dedicated to improving the nation's public school system, especially University City's.
I am directing the completion of Phase I of the capital campaign for University City High School. Our goal is to raise over $20 million to build a new state-of-the-art recreation center connected to the high school. I've included the concept in this document for the rec center which is 135,000 square feet. It will contain a new fitness center, hall of fame area, a two level basketball gymnasium with eight full length courts, complete weight rooms, an Olympic size swimming pool and conference centers.
That's just the beginning. We will make the basketball gym an actual stadium by lowering the court and adding 1,500 more seats. The football field will be completely field turf as well as the fields across the street at Jackson Park. It will also come equipped with two glass-enclosed luxury suits that look over the basketball and football stadiums, just like the ones at many universities. The only other rec center bigger than this is the St. Peters RecPlex. This will truly make U. City High stand out far beyond other schools in the city.
So how do we accomplish this you may ask? Private donations by our more successful alumni is the answer. You all know Nelly is one of the most famous, but nowhere near the wealthiest. We have alumni that are CEOs of corporations, own their own companies, innovators in their fields, and leaders in local and national philanthropy. It will, however, take contacting all 20,000 of our alumni in order to make this concept a reality. This is where we need your help.
Lions Reconnecting IndiansIn order to keep the process moving, we need to raise about $200,000 in seed money to finish Phase I of the project and get the right people in place to begin the extensive capital campaign study and feasibility study. I am looking for UCHS Lions to volunteer to make phone calls over the winter holidays to our UCHS Indian alumni for donations to the project. We also need our Indian alumni to call other Indians! We are looking for people to make two types of contributions:
- Minimum of 50 UCHS alumni Lions and Indians each donating 100 minutes of cell phone or long distance time calling UCHS Indians and/or
- A donation of 100 or more $.39 stamps for pledge mailings
These 5,000 calls and follow-up mailings should produce the amount needed to start the capital campaign and feasibility study process and make this concept happen very soon. We need people to call in blocks of 2 to 5 hours at a time a few days per person while you are back in St. Louis. If you won't be in St. Louis anytime soon you can help from where you live - anywhere in America! Rebuilding UCHS is a truly national effort.
Benefits for UCHS Volunteers
- Letters of recommendation from Project Appleseed president Kevin Walker to schools and employers
- Connecting with established UCHS alumni who can help with career networking
- Connecting with classmates and fellow alums during holidays
- Refreshments and food from Loop restaurants during phone banking
- Pride in giving back and rebuilding University City High School
Please contact me with any questions, stamp donations, or contributions. I need to know when you will be back in U. City for the holidays, or when you can help from your home. You can contact me at jcw18a@yahoo.com or on my cell phone at (314) 651-9168. Stamps and contributions can be mailed to Project Appleseed U. City / 520 Melville Ave. / St. Louis, MO. 63130-4506. Thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
Justin Walker
