DEPARTMENT RELEASES PROPOSED LIST OF SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT SCHOOLS
The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) recently notified 126 schools that they have been tentatively identified as School Improvement Schools. The ADE also notified another 82 schools that they were being placed on a proposed list for Alert Status for School Improvement. The notifications are a part of the guidelines in the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. The proposed designations are for the 2003-2004 school year.
"This is a very important step on the road to implementing Arkansas' school accountability plan," said Ray Simon, Director of the ADE. The 208 schools have 30 days to appeal their designations, explained Simon. Appeals are made to the ADE, and schools must include any supporting evidence that would justify their removal from either listing.
The proposed School Improvement Schools and the Alert Status lists were compiled based on a school's adequate yearly progress (AYP) on the state's Benchmark and End-of-Course Exams. Schools must make state-mandated increases in the percentage of students scoring proficient or above on the exams in order to make AYP. The Benchmark exams are administered to students in Grades 4, 6 and 8, while the End-of-Course Exams are administered for Algebra I and geometry. A Literacy Exam is administered to students in Grade 11.
Of the 126 proposed schools, 109 did not make mandated AYP for two consecutive years, and are designated as being in School Improvement Year 1. Another 15 of the proposed schools did not make AYP for three consecutive years, and are designated as being in School Improvement Year 2. Only two schools on the proposed list did not make AYP for four consecutive years, and are designated as being in School Improvement Year 3. Schools placed on the proposed Alert Status list did not meet AYP for one year. Preliminary results show that 779 schools meet or exceed the performance standard for the combined student population.
