UNIVERSITY CITY, MO. JAN. 2005 --An Olympic competition pool that could host NCAA swimming and diving competitions is one of the many extraordinary features included in the design of a new recreation facility at University City High School. The concept development & costing phase of the Lion Heart Recreation Center at University City High School has begun. The sketch will be used to complete cost estimates and to establish a budget for the project. The preliminary design work establishes the scope of work for the center.
The concept and preliminary sketch plans were developed by the Concept & Construction Team that included Jerry Sincoff, UCHS Class of 1951 and a 2004 inductee into the UCHS Hall of Fame. Mr. Sincoff is the retired president of HOK Architects. Greg Mayes is the parent of a 2001 graduate of UCHS and an architect with Ittner Architects. Ted Christner is the designer of the Center of Clayton and Chairman of Christner Architects. UCHS Principal Beth Bender, Athletic Director Kim Loomis and Project Appleseed National Director and UCHS parent Kevin Walker also participated in the design session. Other members of the team are: UCHS parent and architect Bob Winters, Kwame Building Group president Tony Thompson, UCHS 78'. Thompson is a 2001 inductee in the UCHS Hall of Fame. Mr. Arnold Spirtas UCHS 51', is President of Spirtas Wrecking and a 2004 inductee in the UCHS Hall of Fame. Alex Tryson is a 2001 graduate of UCHS. Mr. Tryson is an architecture student at the University of Kansas and serves as project intern.
Mr. Adam Kruvand UCHS 93', is a partner in Studio2a (http://www.studio2a.net) and will join the Concept & Construction Team from his offices in Chicago, IL. Adam lives in Chicago and has stepped forward to provide the architectural illustrations that will be needed to market the the project to alumni. Studio2a's work is all-encompassing, and includes, but is not limited to, web design; commercial video effects; high resolution architectural and computer animations; and superior quality architectural renderings and illustrations. Its work has been featured on ESPN, CNN, and local news affiliates, as well as in USA TODAY, architecture and trade journals. (Kruvand llustrations, below right, are of the new University of Illinois recreation center).
"The value of seeing a project years before its completion is immeasurable. In my experience there is one firm combining this capability for computer animation with both video and architecture experience and that is Studio2a. Adam Kruvand combines education, experience and fluency across both of the mediums of video and computer animation but brings an understanding of architectural design that is critical to the contribution this work can make," says Phil Hofstra, Principal, HOK Sport, designers of stadiums and sports venues.
