Third Thursday of November

Virginia school stress need for parental involvement

HAMPTON, VIRGINIA, WVEC-TV -- Hampton school officials want more parents involved in the schools and with their children.

November 19, 2009, is National Parent Involvement Day, so on that day, Hampton City School and Parent-Teacher Associations will host events to let parents know what’s going on and suggest ways to fit schools in their busy schedules. For example, they recommend volunteering during classes or setting aside time in the evenings to have dinner with their kids or help with homework.

Organizers hope the one-day focus will help parents realize the importance of spending quality time with their children each day.

They believe it will benefit the child, the parent, the school and the community.

The program is a product of Project Appleseed, the national campaign for public school improvement.

National Parent Involvement Day In California's Bowman
High School

The day was celebrated in style at Bowman High School on November 15th!  Family members and guardians joined students for lunch, introducing their loved ones to staff members and to their peers. Parents spoke eloquently about their love and commitment for their students and were very appreciative of the connections they have formed with Bowman. After taking the Parent Involvement Pledge, our guests accompanied their student to a class, learning first-hand what it’s like to be a Bowman student.  Parents were excited to see their students’ classes, and commented on how the teachers were very welcoming. Families left with smiles on their faces after experiencing a fun day together at Bowman.

One teacher remarked, “It was a pleasure to meet some of the students’ parents, and I was very impressed with the outcome and how involved our parents are.”

Student Catarina Cornejo said, “I had such a good time with my mom coming to class with me!” Some students were a bit nervous and concerned about having their parents and guardians coming to visit their classes, but by the end of the day, the students said that they really enjoyed having their parents come to school.  Bowman student Daisy Rodriguez summed up the event by saying, “It was fun!”

Third Full Week of April

Community progress starts with parents

April 16, 2010, Dallas, TX. - This week provides the chance for parents in the southern half of the city – as well as the rest of Dallas – to get involved with their child's learning.

Project Appleseed's Public School Volunteer Week starts tomorrow, with an emphasis on parents taking a pledge to get – and stay – involved with their child's education. We hope this week sparks a conversation at DISD headquarters about how the district can create its own pledge for parents to sign so they will remain committed to their child's academic progress. Port Angeles, WA. Honors Volunteers During Public School Volunteer Week

April 12, 2010, Port Angeles, Wash. – The Board of Directors adopted Resolution No. 089-07 proclaiming April 18 through April 24, 2010 as Public School Volunteer Week in the Port Angeles School District.

“During the past decade,” notes the proclamation, “school systems throughout the country have accepted the services of dedicated volunteers to assist professional educators, and these volunteers have offered their time, encouragement, and meaningful contact with students.

“Volunteers are called upon to assist teachers and staff with the day-to-day activities involved in providing a balanced education for our students and are an important part of a team that strives to ensure that each and every one of our students succeeds,” continued the proclamation, and “during the school year, countless volunteers are spending innumerable hours serving schools in the Port Angeles School District as chaperones, mentors, after-school tutors, club leaders, booster club members, PTA and PTO members, guest speakers, classroom helpers, athletics coaches, and in countless other ways.”

Project Appleseed, a national campaign for public school improvement, has designated the third week of April as Public School Volunteer Week.  As noted on its website.  Project Appleseed began Public School Volunteer Week in 1997…. to provide opportunities in which parents can volunteer in their local public schools. Seven million parents and family members, in 10,000 schools and districts, are involved in this effort.”

Assistant Superintendent Mary Hebert thanked volunteers from each of the schools represented and honored each school with certificates of recognition.

Tennessee Gov. Bredesen Promotes Appleseed's National Parental Involvement Day

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen proclaimed November 19, 2009, as National Parent Involvement Day in Tennessee in recognition of the critical role parents play in a child’s education.

“Parents are a child’s first teacher and we must encourage strong interaction between families, communities and schools,” Gov. Bredesen said. “Family involvement in a child’s education can only lead to success and higher achievement.” (Pictured above: Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen). More from Nashville...

Georgia State Superintendent Kathy Cox Sends "Extra-Special Thank You to Parents"

ATLANTA - Today is a day I believe most educators are eager to recognize. It’s National Parent Involvement Day (November 19th). This is a time set aside each year to say an extra-special thank you to parents. (Pictured: Georgia State Superintendent Kathy Cox, left.)

The evidence is overwhelming: Students who have highly-involved families get higher grades, have fewer discipline problems, and are more likely to be successful throughout their entire life.

As the parent of two boys, one a sophomore in high school and one a sophomore in college, I know how difficult it can be to get plugged into your child’s education. Life is demanding and there is almost never enough time to get everything done, but being active in your child’s education is arguably the most important role a parent plays. Parents set the tone for education and are their child’s best teacher.  More...

Oregon State Superintendent Castillo Recognizes Parents Play A Critical Role

SALEM - State Superintendent of Public Instruction Susan Castillo commemorated National Parental Involvement Day, recognizing several outstanding parental outreach efforts across Oregon and encouraging all parents to take time to be engaged in their children’s education. (Picture:  Oregon schools superintendent Susan Castillo, left, and U.S. Senator Patty Murray(D-OR), center, participates in a panel discussion on education with and Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX) right)

“The evidence is overwhelming that parents play a critical role in their child’s success. Whether it is better grades, less discipline problems or overall lifetime achievement, parents who take the time to be engaged in their students’ education make a real difference,” said Castillo. “I encourage every parent to make the time in their busy schedules to stay involved in their local school – it will make a big difference for their child and help improve education for all Oregon students.” More...

Oklahoma:  Pledge promises school volunteering, reading

MUSKOGEE - Peggy Willard is an old pro when it comes to volunteering at her grandkids’ school, Harris-Jobe Elementary.

“I always try to be hired as a monitor for the testing period they have here in the spring, and I always try to be involved in other functions,” she said.

Willard put that involvement in writing Thursday when she joined her granddaughters at a Thanksgiving luncheon and parental involvement program at Harris-Jobe on National Parent Involvement Day. Muskogee public schools used Thanksgiving lunches as a way to encourage more parents, grandparents and others to get involved with their children’s education.

MPS Parent Involvement Coordinator Kathleen Harris said parents attending the lunches were encouraged to sign a Parent Involvement Pledge. The pledge committed signers to volunteer at least five hours of time at their children’s school and to spend at least 15 minutes each school night reading or working with their children.

Pictured above: Harris-Jobe Elementary fourth-grader Kerrigan Medlock, 9, watches her grandmother, Peggy Willard, sign a Parental Involvement Pledge during a Thanksgiving lunch Thursday at her school. Texas Charter School Says Parents Are Stars!

by Ruth Campbell Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND - Parents picking up their children from Midland Academy Charter School on Thursday got a boost to mark National Parent Involvement Day in the form of some candy and a handbill saying "MACS Parents are Stars."

Signs, banners and balloons were posted throughout the campus, one of the school's chain link fences sported a signed banner saying "Our Parents are Great," and letters from kids expressing their gratitude to parents were sent home.

State and Federal Programs Coordinator Kathy Cornelius said the federal Title I program emphasizes parental involvement.  More...
